If you are wondering what this all means, ill try and explain what my interpretation is after being in the search engine marketing industry for some time now. Essentially, it is important to get web sites to link to yours. The way their system determines the results it should display on a query, is in part determined by the amount of inbound links to your web site. A link to your web site is considered similar to a vote for your web site to do better in the search results. Generally the more votes you have the better, however you should note that if you go out and purchase hundreds of text link campaigns, participate in any sort of program that will automatically generate links to your web site, or build links too quickly those votes wont count, and may end up huritng you... it simply doesnt look natural enough. Make sure you also do not buy ads from sellers who are selling “pagerank” rather than “text link ads” – There is a big difference here. While there are many legitimate people in the search engine optimization business, people who claim they will boost your pagerank are violating Google’s terms of service, and if Google finds them, they will penalize their web site, which while it will not hurt your web site… it will completely eliminate the effectiveness of the text link ad.

The key is to build a decent amount of inbound links, while being as natural as possible. Get started by purchasing a couple of text links, and throughout the life of your web site, purchase the odd text link or participate in the odd link exchange.

You should also note that all inbound links (or votes) to your web site are not considered equal. If a web page that links to you has higher pagerank, then their vote is considered to be more important. For example, obtaining inbound links from a pr2 or pr3 web page is great, however an inbound link from a pr5 or pr6 web page will be considered a more important vote for you to do better in googles search results… so you should most definitely consider purchasing at least pr5 text links when purchasing text link ads.
